The answer to this is ......BOTH are right.   Here is a letter we received from a customer:

"Hi,
Thank you for your cards.

My question is how you will be translating peanuts to Spanish. Depending on where you are travelling, I believe peanuts can be referred to as Mani, Cacahuate or Cacahuetes.

Peanuts is one of the main allergies I am concerned about for my son. Can you include both Mani and Cacahuate on the card as we are travelling to Central America? I want to ensure his peanut allergy is correctly translated.

Thank you very much."

I answered this customer saying that we have been aware for yearsof the various words for peanuts (and nuts, shellfish and other foods) that are used in various regions of the world. Informal written Spanish the word "cacahuates" is use for peanuts but in South American, Central America and Latin America countries and Mexico the word for peanuts is 'mani'.  For our cards we include botjh to make the peanut cards usable in both Spain and other countries of the world.
